About See Vista

My early childhood memories include greeting life with each of my senses. The scent of honeysuckles wafted across my nostrils, carried by a late afternoon breeze that tickled tiny hairs on my forearm. Sing-song birds, honking horns and barking dogs wiggled my eardrum. Patterns of light and dark cast by natural sunlight, brilliant colors and varying textures awakened the light receptors in my eyes. Without any effort on my part, I sensed my lush reality.

By fifth grade, a blurrier, more two dimensional picture replaced the vibrant one. Colors appeared dull and uninteresting. I noticed less of my surroundings; simultaneously my appreciation for life outside of a book or television declined. I needed my first pair of glasses.

At this time, my mother introduced me to the Bates Method of Natural Vision Improvement. She instructed me to stand a certain distance from the eyechart everyday and try to read the letters. I dreaded this practice and gained no benefit from it. Inevitably, I settled for life in a pale, indistinct world and wore the glasses only to see the blackboard. I recall that I felt embarrassed, sad and confused when I could not recognize a person until she approached four feet away. My prescription increased and I received my second pair of glasses in seventh grade.

A couple years after graduating from high school, I found Bates’ book Perfect Sight Without Glasses and read it cover to cover. Also, I studied The Art of Seeing by Aldous Huxley. Diligently, thirty minutes a day, I practiced the Bates Method as I understood it. I noticed small improvement but eventually stopped the thirty minute daily practice. During this period, I remember sitting outdoors palming (a Bates Method technique). I felt terrified in the darkness under my palms and imagined I might become blind. My self education in Natural Vision Improvement lacked Bates’ fundamental underlying message that relaxation of the visual system creates clarity.

I majored in molecular biology in college: often studying eight hours per day, completing lab work late into the night, taking strenuous exams, and completely disregarding my overall well-being. As my college years drew to a close, once again I needed stronger glasses. This time, logic kicked in. If these poor lifestyle habits equaled blur, I reasoned that the opposite must be true; good lifestyle habits create clarity.

My desire to support good vision came at a time when I lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn with four health nuts. One worked in a health food store; the other earned his living as a personal trainer; a third settled in the Slope from Colorado and practiced many alternative remedies for various health problems; and the fourth, Tina, graduated from Anne Marie Colbin’s Natural Gourmet Cookery School. One night, Tina attended a post- graduate dinner at the school. During the meal, the woman next to her asked, “Would you like to see clearly without glasses?” Tina replied, “Sure.” The woman introduced Tina to Robert Lichtman of Effortless Vision. Tina subsequently enrolled in Mr. Lichtman’s seven-week course. As Tina’s housemate, I watched her gradually decrease her eyeglass prescription during the course. She stopped wearing glasses throughout the day and wore them only when she felt the need. The pivotal point for me in Tina’s vision improvement occurred when we attended a piano concert at Carnegie Hall together. I observed her comfortably hold the program guide at least fourteen inches away from her eyes in dim lighting. Incredibly impressed, I phoned Mr. Lichtman the next day, met privately with him, and enrolled in his upcoming seven-week Natural Vision Improvement course. Following this, I witnessed many Natural Vision Improvement students make the leap towards clarity that Tina demonstrated. After Mr. Lichtman’s course, I completed Thomas Quackenbush’s Natural Vision Improvement teacher training course in the Netherlands. Quackenbush authored the comprehensive text on Natural Vision Improvement Relearning to See: Improve Eyesight – Naturally!

Currently, my vision continues to improve. I work comfortably throughout the day at the near and far point without glasses. More importantly however, I experience daily how the eye, mind and body coordinate to create a clear picture in the mind. Unlike glasses or Lasik, the return to perfect sight using my own eyes includes benefits such as greater attention, better imagination, deeper breath, and a rich, fulfilling relationship with life. Since the eyes are part of the body, Natural Vision Improvement affects the entire body. For example, each of the senses benefit as vision improves. I allow my sense of smell, touch, taste and even intuition to inform each moment. I become a participant in my present-time surroundings, simultaneously letting go of past and future worries. Visual qualities such as color, texture, dimension, shape and movement contribute a more vital role in seeing. If you want to deepen your breath, expand your possibilities and grow to know yourself more intimately, take a step through this door marked “Natural Vision Improvement.” The rewards prove incalculable.
